26 February. 17.30 Klaipėda Ethnoculture Centre (Daržų g. 10) will host an evening of traditional chants “Bishop Motiejus Valančius is forever alive in the canticles”.
This year, the Diocese of Telšiai celebrates its 100th anniversary and the 225th anniversary of the birth of the Bishop of Samogitian Diocese, Motiejus Kazimieras Valančius. The anniversary year invites us to rediscover the Great Bishop of Samogitia – he was not only a novelist, not only an organiser of the sobriety movement, but first and foremost a shepherd and a cultural diplomat, who was concerned about the salvation and the immortality of his faithful and his countrymen. For these noble purposes, he chose the publication of prayer books and hymnals – through the printed word, through hymns, he brought the Good News to every home.
This evening we will honour the Great Bishop of Samogitia, Motiejus Valančius, by singing hymns he wrote in the “Palanga Juze” and in the canticles. The hymns will be sung by the Klaipėda Mary Queen of Peace Parish Folk Singing Ensemble (directed by V. Budreckis), the evening will be hosted by Fr. Prof. Dr. Saulius Stumbra.
